ESEM and changing factor structures |

Hello, I have been using ESEM for my categorical data, and have a question about why my factor structures are changing when I remove items from the analyses. I have 82 items and am attempting to produce a scale with approximately 8 or 9 factors and 5-6 items per factor. My initial analyses produced a satisfactory 8 factor model but with too many items per factor. I reduced each factor to approximately 7 items and ran the ESEM again, however the items that loaded >.4 on the resulting 8-factor solution were quite different to the initial loadings, with a number of items completely switching factors. Can you tell me why this would be happening, and if there is any way I can fix this so that I can keep my desired factor/item structure and still use ESEM? Thanks, Heather |
